Giants is a book written from a child's perspective. It is a story about a little boy whose father passes away. It gives the reader a glimpse of the point of view of a grieving little boy as he tries to navigate his world without his father in it.
I was excited to work on this project with a childhood friend of mine, Andy McIntyre, and provide a much needed resource for parents, teachers, and therapists. The goal of our book is to allow children to explore their feelings about death and give a little insight, to those around them, of how our children experience the loss of a loved one. We hope it will serve as a precursor to ope dialog about a tender subject.
Although I illustrate in many mediums, I specifically selected to illustrate this book using watercolor in honor of my late grandpa, Robert Chaunce, who was a watercolor artist, minister, and teacher. I remember his passing very vividly and the huge impact it had on my innocence.
You may notice the inclusion of the little boy's stuffed animal tiger, Tigey. Tigey makes an appearance in most of the illustrations. His addition is for my son, Eliot, whose stuffed Tigey accompanied him everywhere in his early years. I gave the little boy red hair in honor of the author, Andy who has a fiery head of hair himself.
